Southern women love to cook. It’s in our DNA and part of our cultural ethos. But the truth is, I always struggled to put a healthy meal on the table even before kids entered the picture. About nine years ago, I decided I wanted to outsource this whole dinner duty to someone else. I was at a fancy fundraiser for Open Hand Atlanta, and someone on stage mentioned the philanthropy delivers meals to homebound seniors and the ill and… oh yeah, the group also has the best premade meal program called Good Measure Meals. (Spoiler alert: There’s a discount code below.)
Whoo hoo! (Yes, I pitched a woo.) Not only is this premade meal program good for you but it is good for Atlanta too. This was years before the whole meal program boom of Hello Fresh, Blue Apron, etc.
At that time, I had a newborn baby and cooking meals for my husband and I became just one more thing that was too difficult to pull off night after night. (He has never cooked a meal in his life, so that’s a story for me to complain about another time.) Around this same time, my husband found out from the doctor he was having cholesterol issues. Good Measure Meals eventually became our savior. They are all healthy and nutritious.
Guess what’s more surprising? They taste good. Some of my fave dishes have been beef stroganoff, breakfast sandwiches, date pancakes, butternut squash ravioli, chicken puttanesca, mushroom loaf risotto and baked fish picatta. All Good Measure Meals are nutritionally balanced and you have 80+ freshly prepared choices. Basically, they make them from scratch each week and a friendly driver delivers them right to your door.
Additionally, check your zip code on the homepage here to see if they deliver to you around Atlanta. They’ve also given me a 20% off code for you to use. Type SDS20 in the checkout.
(Full disclosure: I get no kickback from Good Measure Meals or affiliate fee, I’m just a super fan. And, this is a worthy cause. So give it a try. Could be $10-$30 off depending what you buy.)
For me, it’s the fact that I don’t have to chop, mix or prepare anything. I can simply heat the meals up in the oven or microwave. Is that Two-Sided Southern? I think so. As in, I love home cooked meals, but I don’t feel like making them. I’m folksy, but bougie at the same time.
So what happened? My husband’s cholesterol dropped to good levels and he lost a bunch of weight. Even better? I didn’t have to make dinner. I simply heated up the Good Measure Meals and they were well-balanced and nutritional. Although we’ve been eating the individual meals for a while, we now are trying the family-sized meals that my kids can enjoy too. That’s why I say they’re the best premade meal program I’ve found. They don’t just do us good, they do our city good. Every purchase goes back to Open Hand Atlanta. To date, my family has supported 340 meals for others. It tracks that intel for me on my login page.
All the meals are made in Midtown Atlanta. And 5,200 meals go out each day throughout the city to those in need. The program started in 2004 and 14,000 volunteers help the organization pack the meals. What I love is that 100% of net proceeds directly support Open Hand Atlanta to deliver food to Atlantans facing food insecurity and nutrition-sensitive chronic disease. The organization cares for ill neighbors and home-bound seniors around Metro Atlanta. Pretty impressive, y’all.
