Sparkle. Dazzle. Flash. Glitter. Diamonds. Crystals. Glam. Beads. Pearls. Pure over-the-topness. These are all the yummy words you will experience and see at The Blonds: Glamour, Fashion, Fantasy exhibition at SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film in Atlanta (aka Scad Fash).
Firstly, I was able to attend the fashionably fierce opening night party on Aug. 10, 2023 with a roomful of the chicest Atlantans I’ve seen in forever. The Blonds themselves did a 45-minute Q&A and posed for pics with special guest, performer Missy Elliot afterward. Secondly, the exhibition opened to the public the next day and runs through Jan. 29, 2024. Thirdly, it was curated by the beloved and charming Rafael Gomes, creative director of SCAD FASH museums.
And y’all, if you could have seen the crowd at the opening night. Hot damn I was so proud of Atlanta! We are so chic. Above all, the crowd that was there brought their style A-game. It was the best of avant-garde Atlanta I’ve ever seen.
This is a first for The Blonds. And that’s a big deal for our city as well. The renowned fashion designers have never exhibited their iconic looks before for the public. Finally, 80 of their most elaborate, show-stopping pieces are on display at the top of the SCAD building in Midtown.
So who are The Blonds? For the Two-Sided Southern fashionistas who haven’t yet seen this duo’s elaborate fashions on the red carpet, stage or adorning Katy Perry, Beyoncé, Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna or Lady Gaga, let me spill the tea.
Designers and life partners David and Phillipe Blond met in the New York City club scene decades ago. They formed a crazy bond built on decadence and originality. In the beginning, they used to scour the Lower East Side to find beads and crystals to hand sew onto their nightlife pieces. However, they turned it into a career and a fashion house that caters to those who love opulence. Glamour, Fashion, Fantasy brings all of that experience and passion to life for the day-dreaming fashion lovers roaming the South looking for a one-of-a-kind show like they’ve never seen before.
To clarify, run don’t walk to Scad Fash to see these pieces on display.
“These looks and more await fans, stans, and students alike in David and Phillipe Blond’s first-ever museum exhibition anywhere in the world — where Disney meets decadence and stage costume meets haute couture. Bling is back!” says Paula Wallace, SCAD President and Founder.
I feel like one of those stans now. You will be too.
Moreover, it is a stunning exhibit and worth a stop by for a dose of glitz, glam, gold and gorgeousness to anyone who enjoys that sort of thing.
